Why AM I A Liberal?

Geoffrey R. Stone has an written a great editorial in the Chicago Tribune titled What it means to be a liberal. I thought that since I was a liberal I would tell you why I am a liberal in response to his observations.

I love to speak my mind and there is nothing I enjoy more than a good debate. I am well traveled and intelligent. I have an open mind, I realize that everyones circumstances stances are different and that their life experiences have influenced the way the view the world. I have the ability to attempt to see things from a point of veiw other than my own. I personally have no use whatsoever for pornography but I do believe it should be up to the ADULTS who purchase it and the ADULTS who provide it to make those decisions for themselves. Government has no business making personal decisions for us.

I believe that the Constitution made each of us the Kings of our own lives. The people who we send to Washington are not our leaders or our rulers, they are our employees, they work for us we have to many things to do we have to delgate therefore they need to get busy looking out for OUR INTEREST. Since they work for me I expect them to provide my with a few services that make my life better such as a strong military, good roads, good schools and FEMA. You see I cannot afford to pay to have people on standby in case I have a disaster beyond my abilty to function that may or may not happen in my lifetime. It only makes sense to pool my money with the rest of the country to have these resources available if I need them. If I live my entire life and don't need them then I should thank God, provided I am worthy of meeting Him when this life is over. I believe that we are judged by how we treat the least among us, therefore it is our responsibility to to see that children, the elderly and the handicapped can have, food, shelter and medical care ( In a perfect world they would also receive love but that is beyond governments abilty and should be left to friends, family and faith based initiatives.)

I love my faith. I believe in God and his son Jesus. My relationship with them is very personal I do not need the Commandments posted in a courthouse, a public prayer in school, or the words under God in a pledge to remind my of them, I carry them in my heart, thats enough. I belive that our legal system is basically just even though it is not perfect. I believe the judge that interpret the Constitution have tried to be fair and leave their personal feeling out of what the intent of the writers was and I hope this continues.

I believe that I have a right to privacy to be treated fairly by our government and the courts no matter who I am, how much money I have, what language I speak or what religon I practice. I believe this to be enduring and unrevocable. That is why am a liberal and proud of it.
